The Oi Rio Pro Presented by Corona, Stop No. 8 on the World Surf League (WSL) 2022 Championship Tour (CT), is OFF for the day with unruly surf and strong onshore winds at Praia de Itaúna, Saquarema. The WSL Tours and Competition team will make the next call on Monday, June 27, at 7:00 a.m. (GMT-3) for a possible 7:35 a.m. start.

When competition resumes, the men’s Round of 16 will kick off with an exciting matchup between current world nr. 2 Jack Robinson (AUS) and event wildcard Mateus Herdy (BRA). Both Robinson and Herdy wowed the crowds with their impressive air game in their previous heats.

The women’s Semifinals will see Johanne Defay (FRA) take on Gabriela Bryan (HAW) in the first heat, and Carissa Moore (HAW) take on Tatiana Weston-Webb (BRA) in Heat 2.

 

Raising Environmental Awareness in Saquarema

During the Oi Rio Pro, WSL and surfers Caio Ibelli and Isabella Nichols teamed up with local organizations and We Are One Ocean regional partners to protect and conserve the coastal ecosystems.
 
SOS Mata Atlântica and WSL PURE, together with local organizations Mar Sem Lixo project, Blue Birds sustainable tourism and institutional support from the Rio de Janeiro State Institute of Environment, seized the opportunity to combine the WSL Championship Tour event with a mobilization aligned to the Massambaba Environmental Protected Area. The action involved a beach-clean up and the planting of coastal vegetation species, with the participation of kids form the Saquarema Surf School together with their surfing idols and the local population.
